Questions, answered.

The honest answers to what people ask us most.

What do I get for $29?

A 3D scan of your pet, a brick version you can try in up to five sizes (from about 200 to 2,500 bricks, sized to your pet’s shape), then a parts list and a step-by-step guidebook for the size you choose. Every size shows its exact height, width, length, brick count and cost.

How do the sizes work?

By number of bricks. Most pets get five sizes: Mini (about 200 bricks), Small (about 400), Medium (about 800), Large (about 1,500) and Extra large (about 2,500). We pick each size’s height to suit your pet’s shape, so a greyhound stands taller than a hamster with the same number of bricks. Pets with very thin legs, like greyhounds, only get the sizes we’re confident are structurally sound, and if two sizes would come out almost the same height we keep the bigger one. The counts are targets until we build your pet; then you see the exact height, width, length, brick count and cost of every size before you choose.

Do you send me the bricks?

No. We design your pet; you buy the genuine LEGO® bricks yourself from LEGO® Pick a Brick by uploading the parts list we give you. LEGO® Pick a Brick takes payment, sets the shipping cost and delivers.

How much do the bricks cost?

It depends on the size. For our example pets it’s about £20–£30 for Mini (about 200 bricks), £100–£145 for Medium (about 800) and £345–£460 for Extra large (about 2,500), plus delivery. You see the exact cost for your pet, in your country, before you choose a size.

Will it really look like my pet?

AI turns your photos into a 3D model for you to check before it becomes bricks. Small sizes are chunkier; bigger sizes show more detail.

Can I get a refund?

We don’t offer change-of-mind refunds once the digital service begins with your consent. If a 3D scan fails on our side, its credit is returned. Your statutory rights still apply.

What photos do I need?

Three clear, well-lit photos: their face straight on, their whole body from the side, and one from between the front and the side. We check each photo as you go and tell you exactly what to fix.

Is it hard to build?

The guidebook shows every step, a few bricks at a time, with clear pictures. Mini is about 200 bricks: a cosy evening or two. Extra large is about 2,500 bricks: a proper project. Have a look inside the sample guidebook first.

How long does it all take?

Your 3D model is usually ready in a few minutes, and its brick sizes a few minutes after you approve it. Your guidebook takes a minute or two. The bricks come from LEGO® Pick a Brick, usually in one to two weeks and sometimes up to four, depending on where you live.

Will it arrive in time for Christmas?

LEGO® Pick a Brick delivery can take a few weeks at busy times, so start early and order your bricks as soon as your guidebook is ready.

Can I change the size later?

Preview your pet’s sizes for as long as you like. The size you choose is the one for your parts list and guidebook. Want another size later? Open your pet and choose New size. It’s a new $29 order, and we reuse your photos.

What if a brick is out of stock?

We only use bricks LEGO® Pick a Brick sells in your country, and we check them when we make your parts list. Stock can still change, so check every piece is available before you pay. If one isn’t, try again in a few days.

Are you associated with the LEGO Group?

No. BuildMyPet is an independent company. The LEGO Group does not sponsor, authorise or endorse us.

Is it suitable for children?

The finished pet is a display model, not a toy. LEGO® bricks are small parts, so keep them away from children under 3, and younger builders will want a grown-up to help.

Can I give it as a gift?

Yes! You’ll need three photos of the pet. Have the bricks sent from LEGO® Pick a Brick to any address, then print or share the guidebook.

Which countries can I order from?

29 countries: the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and 24 in Europe. We work out your parts and prices for your country’s LEGO® Pick a Brick store, so you choose your country before your 3D scan.

What happens to my photos?

We use them to check your photos and make your pet’s 3D model, with the help of trusted AI services, and keep them with your account. Our privacy policy has the details.

How we build your pet.

For the technically curious: every step between your three photos and your guidebook, and how we check each one.

How many checks does my pet go through?

Dozens, at every stage. An AI model checks each photo as you take it: the angle, the whole body in view, sharpness, one animal, and never the same photo twice. Another tidies each photo, taking out leads and backgrounds, and a third check compares the result with your original before we use it. You approve the 3D model yourself before we lay a single brick. Then every size is checked twice, by two separate programs: one designs the bricks, and an independent checker rebuilds everything from the finished brick list and trusts nothing the designer says about its own work.

How does a 3D model become bricks?

We sample your pet’s 3D model along all three axes on the brick grid: one cell per stud across, one per brick height up. Each size gets its own height, picked from an estimate of how many bricks it needs, and two sizes that would come out almost the same merge into the bigger one. We pack the cells only with brick shapes and colours sold in your country’s LEGO® Pick a Brick store, then look for weak seams, where a few studs would hold a whole part on, and repack across them.

How do you handle legs and hips?

Legs are where brick animals usually fail, so they have their own rules. Every paw stands on the floor; a paw lifted in your photo is brought down to it. Each leg is tied into the body by a brick with two studs on top of the leg and two in the body. Where a thigh flares out wider than the leg below it, that part is built as body, not hung off the leg. A thin tail, which often comes out as a chain of loose specks, is joined back to the body. If a size still can’t be built soundly, we drop it rather than sell it, which is why slim dogs like greyhounds sometimes get fewer sizes.

How do you choose the colours?

From your pet’s own coat. We read the 3D model’s colours the way light really mixes, so the edge between light and dark fur doesn’t turn muddy. Each spot then takes the nearest LEGO® colour that’s actually sold in that brick shape in your country. Lone specks that would look like mistakes take the colour around them, but eyes, noses and paw pads always keep their dark bricks. Coats that bricks can show two ways, like brindle, also get a Natural version that follows the fur more closely, and you choose.

Is it hollow inside?

Partly, and carefully. Bricks nobody will ever see take the colour of the bricks around them, which keeps your parts list short. In the body of a standing pet we then try taking out bricks buried deep inside. We keep a change only if the outside looks exactly the same from every direction, underneath included, the outer shell, inner ribs and the bricks holding up the back all still pass, and your bricks cost less. Faces, legs and tails are never hollowed.

How do you know it will stand up?

We build every size in a simulator before you see it. Bricks go on in order, as you would place them: each one has to be supported when it goes on, with a clear path to lower it in and press it down. Any part hanging below a join is checked to make sure the studs above can carry its weight. At the end we let go, and the pet has to stand on its own. The simulator treats clicked bricks as rigid, so it can’t measure how firmly they grip. We tell you that rather than claim more.

How do you make the guidebook?

Only after you choose a size, from that exact brick list. It builds from the floor up, a few bricks per step. Legs and other parts that are easier to make on their own are built beside the model and pressed on, as you would at a table. Every picture is drawn from the real bricks, and a separate checker replays the whole book to make sure each step works in that order and the parts list matches the book brick for brick.

How do you know the guidebook is clear?

We regularly make an AI build the pet from it. A fresh AI model gets nothing but the guidebook PDF and a simulated table of bricks. It can’t see the answer, and the table only tells it what a real one would: a brick doesn’t fit, or falls off. We watch it build live, mark every brick right or wrong against the design and score the finished pet. When it goes wrong, we find the first picture it misread and redraw it. If an AI can follow the pictures without a word of help, so can you.

Will my pet always come out the same?

Yes. Our brick engine is deterministic: the same 3D model and the same country’s bricks always give the same pet, brick for brick. That means we can test any pet again exactly and see precisely what each improvement changes. Before every engine release we rebuild a set of real pets, from greyhounds to corgis, beagles and cats, and they have to keep their sizes.
